2011 Boys Water Polo Season

Hi Everyone:

Welcome (almost) to the 2011 SHS Boys Water Polo season.  We’ve made progress in the past few months on scheduling practice times, organizing volunteers and setting the game schedule.  We’d like to share this information so you can begin planning for the season.

Theo will be returning as head coach. Brandon Arias will be assisting 4 days per week. We hope to begin captains’ practices the week of 8/22. A location is not yet finalized but we will let you know as soon as we can.

Try outs will be Saturday 8/27 from 12:30 to 2:30. The playing season will run through November 12, followed by a banquet, date to be announced. We will have our kick-off parents’ meeting at the same time at the school, location TBD. Nussbaum’s will host a season opening pool party at their home on Saturday 9/10. Our practice schedule is as follows:

Monday – Friday:  5:30PM – 7:00PM
Saturday:  7AM – 8:30AM
Saturday:  4PM – 6PM

Our game schedule, still subject to some changes, is attached.

Daniel and David are working on suits and team apparel, and plan to have samples and order forms for the team kick-off meeting.

Wreckers Swim Across the Sound

For the second year in a row, Staples Swimming has created a relay team that will Swim Across the Sound.

On August 6, 2011, five current and past Staples swimmers will participate in St. Vincent’s Hospital’s Swim Across the Sound, swimming 15.5 miles to raise money to support cancer patients.

Last year, the Staples team placed 14th with a four-person team and raised over $10,000. This year, the team has expanded to five swimmers who hope to beat both those achievements.

The Staples Swim Across the Sound team includes:

• Gabrielle Wimer
• Joss Abel
• Laurence Abel
• Kyle Bacon

The Staples team will swim in honor of Masato Sakaguchi – the four-year-old brother of Fairfield swimmers Miki, Tomoya, Toshi, and Miku — who passed away last July after a two-year battle with brain cancer. The Staples swimmers hope that one day children like Masato will be able to beat their cancer. That is why they ask you to support them. They would greatly appreciate any donation that you can make (no amount is too small).

Water Polo Alumni Scrimmage

Who: Open to all

When: Wednesday, November 24th,
3 pm start, arrive earlier, by 2:30/ 2:45 to make up teams

Where: Staples Pool

Until When: We will play until 5:30 pm, depending on numbers

What should you do? : Come and play Water Polo!!!

And tell any alums!

Greenwich Tournament Schedule 10/29 & 30

The schedule for the upcoming Greenwich Tournament has been emailed to players/parents and is summarized in the calendar on this site.  In a nutshell:

Fri pm games @ 7:40 (SHS-A) and 8:35 (SHS-B).

Saturday games @ 4:10(A), 5:00 (B), 7:30 (B) and 8:20 (A).

Bus and warmup times will be posted when available.

Wanted: Cake Flushing Photos & Videos

My father is putting together a “cake flushing” video for the Thanksgiving Weekend “Tribute to Cameron” and he asked me to pull together photos and videos.

Friends of Cam (especially those of you in college): please take a short video, or a series of photos, showing you flushing “cake for Cam”. We’d especially like the photos or videos to include some shots showing where you are (such as a sign of your college).

When you are done, email me and I’ll tell you how to upload your piece to my MobileMe iDisk.

A Celebration of Cameron’s Life

The Bruce family invites Cameron’s friends, teachers, coaches and teammates to participate in a tribute to Cameron during the late afternoon of November 27, 2010, the Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend. (The exact time and location of the tribute will be announced later in October.) Cameron’s parents and Margot want to offer Cameron’s friends a chance to remember him in their own way, whether with words, music, or something unique.

If you wish to play some music, sing, read a poem, perform a skit or share a treasured memory during the celebration, the Bruce family would like to hear from you. They also will need logistical and technical help with the celebration. If you want to participate, please send an e-mail to Friends of Cameron Bruce, outlining what you would like to do.

Cameron’s parents and Margot will take your ideas and – with the help of friends – put together a program that truly will be a tribute to Cameron’s life and the way he affected us all.

Pasta Dinner Mon 10/11 at the Slater’s

There will be a Pasta Dinner on Columbus Day, Monday 10/11 at the Slater’s home: 17 Park Lane, Westport.

There will be no practice that day as SHS will be closed – please plan to arrive for dinner at 5:30/

Bus departure is 11:50am on Saturday(not 11:20)

Greenwich HS Tournament Update

Please note that there have been changes to the schedule for this weekend’s tournament at Greenwich High School. Current schedule:

Friday: Bus @ SHS 5pm / Game 6:45pm

Saturday: Bus @SHS 11:50am / Games at 1:20, 5:30, 8pm / Return bus approx 9pm

There will be sandwiches for those who ordered them –  please be sure to bring drinks and other food you might want to have.

Reminder: players will not be allowed to leave Greenwich HS for any reason unless they have a signed Travel Release Form.
